Searching for the family of a kwi soldier sheltered by my italian family in italy during wwI

6/23/2018

Buongiorno
I am a member of Club Garibaldi (Wellington) and Circolo Italiano di Wellington and I am hoping you may be able to help me.
My family are from Brische, Meduna di Livenza in Italy. The place is between Treviso and Venice in Northern Italy.
During WW1  the family (Battiston) sheltered and fed a New Zealand soldier from Christchurch. Eventually the soldier walked to Caorole where he took a submarine and started his journey back to New Zealand. He corresponded with the family for a while. In later years, my grandparents Pietro (Peter) and Caterina Battiston emigrated to Lower Hutt, in the Wellington region where they lived the rest of their lives. My grandfather worked for Murphy’s brickworks, was a gardener for a priest and later became a market gardener. He continued to correspond with the soldier who was then in Christchurch. We think the soldier may have been a butcher.

I would love to be in touch with the soldier’s family to hear their side of the story and learn a bit more about my family.
I can be contacted at chatscottage@xtra.co.nz

Tanti auguri and grazie mille in anticipo.
 Susan Wilde (nee Battiston).

Festa della repubblica

5/24/2018

June 2nd is a very important day for Italy and for all Italians; Republic Day, also known as Festa della Repubblica celebrates the day when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy in 1946 so their country could become a republic.
The main celebration takes place in the capital with performances from military bands, and a huge military parade passes through central Rome. Smaller celebrations can be seen in many other cities and towns. The highlight is the flyover by Frecce Tricolori, Italy's Air Force. The planes fly over the Altare della Patria monument, leaving a trail of green, white and red smoke. Each year a wreath is also laid at this Altare della Patria, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where an eternal flame burns.
To celebrate this significant day The Dante Society in Christchurch has organised an Italian Aperitivo at Casamassima.

Join us on Saturday 2nd June at Casamassima Italian Fare, 48 Salisbury Street, Christchurch from 6:00 till 8:00pm to celebrate this significant day with an Aperitivo and some traditional Italian Food.

The Manghi - Villani Duo in Italy XX Century

2/19/2018

Luca Manghi and Flavio Villani, Italian musicians now based in New Zealand, will perform in public together for the first time, a programme of twentieth-century Italian works for flute and piano. They will explore the various musical styles of a century of Italian music, with works by Alfredo Casella and Nino Rota, along with the neoclassicism of Giorgio Ferrari, the more contemporary works of Luciano Berio and Salvatore Sciarrino, and an homage to New Zealand music tradition with a work by Gillian Whithead.

This programme of solo and chamber music works, prepared especially for this occasion, showcases the perfect synergy between the two instruments, and the talent of the musicians.

Directed by Andrea Gropplero di Troppenburg

The authentic voice of Italian noir

4/29/2017

Timeshift profiles a new wave of Italian crime fiction that has emerged to challenge the conventions of the detective novel. There are no happy endings in these noir tales, only revelations about Italy's dark heart - a world of corruption, unsolved murders and the mafia.
The programme features exclusive interviews with the leading writers from this new wave of noir, including Andrea Camilleri (creator of the Inspector Montalbano Mysteries) and Giancarlo De Cataldo (Romanzo Criminale), who explains how his work as a real-life investigating judge inspired his work. From the other side of the law, Massimo Carlotto talks about how his novels were shaped by his wrongful conviction for murder and years spent on the run from the police.
The film also looks at the roots of this new wave. Carlo Emilio Gadda (That Awful Mess) used the detective novel to expose the corruption that existed during Mussolini's fascist regime and then, after the Second World War, Leonardo Sciascia's crime novels (The Day of The Owl) tackled the rise of the Sicilian mafia. These writers established the rules of a new kind of noir that drew on real events and offered no neat endings.
Also featuring Italian writers Carlo Lucarelli and Barbara Baraldi, the film uses rarely seen archive from Italian television.
