Buongiorno I am a member of Club Garibaldi (Wellington) and Circolo Italiano di Wellington and I am hoping you may be able to help me. My family are from Brische, Meduna di Livenza in Italy. The place is between Treviso and Venice in Northern Italy. During WW1 the family (Battiston) sheltered and fed a New Zealand soldier from Christchurch. Eventually the soldier walked to Caorole where he took a submarine and started his journey back to New Zealand. He corresponded with the family for a while. In later years, my grandparents Pietro (Peter) and Caterina Battiston emigrated to Lower Hutt, in the Wellington region where they lived the rest of their lives. My grandfather worked for Murphy’s brickworks, was a gardener for a priest and later became a market gardener. He continued to correspond with the soldier who was then in Christchurch. We think the soldier may have been a butcher.
I would love to be in touch with the soldier’s family to hear their side of the story and learn a bit more about my family. I can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org
Tanti auguri and grazie mille in anticipo. Susan Wilde (nee Battiston).
