La Società Dante Alighieri is an international organisation committed to promoting the Italian language and culture. With its headquarters in Rome and over 500 branches worldwide, it serves as a vital link to Italy’s rich heritage and traditions.
Founded in 1960 by Bruno Ballara, La Società Dante Alighieri di Christchurch is a registered charity and incorporated society. Our mission is to preserve and promote the Italian language and culture, strengthen the ties between Italian expats and their homeland, and inspire a greater appreciation of Italy among Cantabrians. Our members come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups—some are Italians living in Christchurch, others have experienced the beauty of Italy firsthand, or simply share a passion for its culture. From February to November, we meet monthly to celebrate and explore Italian traditions, language, and history. If you would like to learn more about the structure and purpose of our Society, you can download our constitution below. We warmly welcome anyone with an interest in Italy to join us in fostering this cultural connection.
