La Società Dante Alighieri di Christchurch has been sharing Italian language and culture in Christchurch since 1960.
Founded by Bruno Ballara, our society is a registered charity and incorporated society, and part of the global Società Dante Alighieri network - an international organisation based in Rome with more than 500 branches worldwide dedicated to promoting Italian language and culture. For over 60 years, we have brought together Italians, families, learners, and lovers of Italian culture from across Christchurch and the South Island. Our aim is to preserve and celebrate the Italian language and heritage, strengthen the connection between Italians abroad and their homeland, and foster a wider appreciation of Italy within the local community. Today, Dante Christchurch is both a cultural society and a community hub. Through language classes, film, conversation groups, family activities, and cultural events, we create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect, learn, and take part in Italian life in Christchurch. Our members include Italians living in Christchurch, people with Italian heritage, students of the language, and many others who simply share a love of Italy and its culture. What brings us together is a shared interest in language, community, and cultural exchange. From February to November, we meet regularly to celebrate and explore Italian traditions, language, history, and contemporary culture in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
